A Busy Season of Growth and Preparation
As we reflect on the progress of our lavender farm this year, we are thrilled to share some exciting developments with you! The 200 lavender plants we planted in May 2024 are thriving beautifully. In the fall, we gave them a trim to help focus their energy on root development as they settle in for the winter—preparing for an even stronger season ahead.
This Thanksgiving weekend and the two weeks following, we put in a lot of hard work preparing our new, larger lavender field. I’ve designed this space as a more formal garden, with straight rows and graceful, curved patterns that resemble ripples on water, all radiating from a central raised bed. This center will house our small wind turbine, which will generate the power needed to run our irrigation well and system—an exciting step toward sustainability!
We’ve been busy digging 4,000 feet of trenches, laying 2,000 feet of irrigation pipe, and moving 2 dump truck loads of sand and 1 dump truck load of mulch. We also set up 225 bricks and 12 - 4x8 planter boxes to prepare the garden beds. A huge thank you goes to my Aunt and Uncle, who generously offered their labor and brought a tractor to make moving dirt a whole lot easier. Jake also helped for a few hours, and Jeremy, my hero, spent five days connecting all the irrigation pipes. We're almost ready to automate the system with valves and timers to take care of the watering.
This new field will eventually host around 750 new lavender plants, most of which will be culinary varieties that can also be distilled into essential oils. I've been working with my hydroponic system to get these plants started, and we currently have about 100 young plants in small pots, ready to go. We’ll order topsoil in March (about 5 dump truck loads!), and the planting is planned for mid-May.
We are so grateful for everyone who has supported this project—this is truly a team effort! We can't wait to see these new lavender plants grow and flourish in the coming months, and we look forward to bringing you more updates on our journey.
