🌿 Hidcote Lavender

Deep Purple Beauty from Our New Mexico Farm

At Figments, each lavender variety has its own personality, purpose, and place in our gardens. One of our favorites for color, fragrance, and versatility is Hidcote Lavender.

With its rich purple blooms and compact growth habit, Hidcote is both beautiful and hardworking — a true classic in the lavender world.

This plant plays an important role in our farm and in many of the products we create.

🌸 Botanical Profile

Common Name: Hidcote Lavender
Botanical Name: Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’
Type: English Lavender
Growth Habit: Compact, mounded plant
Bloom Color: Deep violet-purple
Fragrance: Sweet, strong, and classic lavender

Hidcote is known for producing some of the darkest purple flowers among English lavenders, making it especially prized for dried arrangements and visual appeal.

🌱 How Hidcote Grows on Our Farm

On our New Mexico farm, Hidcote thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It forms tidy, rounded bushes that are easy to manage and harvest.

We’ve found that Hidcote:

  • Handles our high desert climate well

  • Maintains strong color even when dried

  • Produces highly fragrant blooms

  • Responds beautifully to careful pruning

Because of its compact size, it fits nicely into our planting layout and allows us to harvest efficiently.

✂️ Harvest & Bloom Characteristics

Hidcote blooms in early to mid-summer, producing dense flower spikes packed with essential oils.

When harvesting, we look for:

✔ Fully developed color
✔ Tight flower buds
✔ Strong aroma
✔ Healthy green stems

We harvest in the morning after the dew has dried, when fragrance is at its peak.

The blooms dry exceptionally well and retain both color and scent.

🫖 How We Use Hidcote on the Farm

Hidcote is one of our most versatile lavenders. On our farm, we primarily use it for:

🌿 Sachets & Linen Care

Its strong fragrance makes it ideal for drawer sachets, sleep sachets, and linen refreshers.

🌿 Culinary & Tea Blends

Because it’s an English lavender, Hidcote has a smooth, sweet flavor that works well in:

  • Lavender teas

  • Baking blends

  • Sugars and honey infusions

🌿 Infused Oils

We infuse Hidcote into oils for use in salves and balms, where its calming aroma shines.

🌿 Dried Bundles & Decor

Its deep purple color makes it perfect for:

  • Mini bundles

  • Wreaths

  • Gift packaging

  • Field Guide keepsakes

💛 A Note from Diane

One of the joys of growing lavender is learning each plant’s rhythm. Hidcote has taught me patience, consistency, and appreciation for small details — like how color deepens as blooms mature.

It’s a reminder that beauty often comes from steady, careful tending.
